Key notes: GJC to present ‘Big Band Jazz Revue’; GSO and Foothills Philharmonic to perform Masterworks concerts

The Greenville Jazz Collective Big Band will perform a special “Big Band Jazz Revue” concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29 at Centre Stage in Greenville.

The Greenville Jazz Collective Big Band will celebrate the history of Big Band music with a special “Big Band Jazz Revue” concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29 at Centre Stage, 501 River St., Greenville.

The group will play works by such iconic composers as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Thad Jones and more. Vocalist Tish Oney will accompany the GJC Big Band for the show.

The Greenville Symphony Orchestra will present “Love, Drama, Triumph!” as part of its Masterworks Series at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2 and at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3 at the Peace Center, 300 S. Main St., Greenville.

Led by its longtime conductor Edvard Tchivzhel, the GSO wil take the audience on a rollercoaster of contrasting emotions in which the ups and downs of love are experienced through two powerful pieces: Wagner’s jubliant “Prelude to Lohengrin” and Mahler’s epic and transformative Symphony no. 5.

Foothills Philharmonic will continue its 20th anniversary season with its annual food drive and Masterworks Concert II on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Riverside Baptist Church, 1249 S. Suber Rd., Greer.

The concert will feature audience and orchestral member favorites from the past 20 years, including Dukas’ “Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” Saint Saens’ “Danse Macabre,” Holst’s “Mars (from the Planets)” and Bax’s playful “November Woods.”

Admission to the concert is free but attendees are encouraged to bring canned food items to help Greer Community Ministries replenish its food pantry in preparation for the Thanksgiving season.
